The Virgin

Story

A calm woman with shut eyes gazes out beneath a dark blue veil patterned with embroidered flowers, her head ringed by a glowing halo. Around her runs a border bright with painted fruits and blossoms. Joseph Stella made this oil painting in 1926, working within the context of Futurism and Precisionism as an Italian-American artist. The piece entered the Brooklyn Museum as a gift from Adolph Lewisohn.
