Artist

Juan Gris, born José Victoriano González-Pérez in Madrid, was a Spanish painter and one of the most important figures of Cubism. After studying engineering and illustration in Spain, he moved to Paris in 1906, where he became part of the avant-garde circle that included Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, and poet Guillaume Apollinaire. Initially working as a satirical illustrator, Gris soon devoted himself fully to painting and developed a distinctive Cubist style marked by clarity, precision, and balanced composition.Unlike the muted tones often associated with early Cubism, Gris introduced luminous color harmonies and elegant geometric structures, becoming a leading practitioner of Synthetic Cubism. His still lifes, portraits, and collage works combined intellectual rigor with visual refinement, influencing later modernist movements including Purism. Gris also designed sets and costumes for the Ballets Russes and wrote extensively about artistic theory. Though he died at only forty, his work remains central to the history of modern art and Cubism.
