Les Raisins

Story

A composition breaks into angular planes of navy, green, yellow, cream, and burgundy, arranging a torn piece of newspaper alongside a bowl holding grapes within a scattered geometric structure. The forms overlap and shift, flattening the scene into interlocking facets rather than a single, unified view of the tabletop arrangement. Painted in oil on plywood in 1916, the piece reflects the cubism associated with its Spanish-born creator, Juan Gris (1887–1927), who was also recognized for Carafe and Book.
