Portrait of Pablo Picasso

Story

A man in a pale jacket emerges from an arrangement of faceted planes rendered in beige, gray, and blue tones, his features broken into angular fragments that still suggest a recognizable face. The figure portrayed is Pablo Picasso, rendered as a man within a fractured cubist structure. This oil portrait was completed in 1912 and is held at the Art Institute of Chicago. Its painter, Juan Gris (1887–1927), was a Spanish artist associated with cubism, also known for his work Carafe and Book. Looking closely, the jacket's crisp white tone stands apart from the muted, overlapping geometric shapes that build the surrounding space, giving the composition a quiet structural rhythm.
