Still-life with Bottle and Cigars

Story

A composition of fragmented geometric shapes rises in a vertical arrangement, built from flat planes in tan, black, yellow, white, and rust. These forms suggest a bottle and cigars dissolved into angular facets rather than rendered naturally. The piece combines gouache, pastel, charcoal, collage, pen and India ink, and pencil on paper, created in 1912 by Juan Gris, a Spanish artist associated with cubism.

Where it works

A still life suited to living rooms and dens, and to boardrooms, in a vertical format.
