The Bunch of Grapes

Story

A tabletop composition brings together a cluster of grapes, a pitcher, and a spoon, set among white ceramic vessels against a brown and pink background, with a bottle marked "Pernod" standing among the shapes. The arrangement breaks the objects into flattened, overlapping planes, giving the whole scene a geometric rhythm typical of the cubist approach. The painting, titled The Bunch of Grapes, was made in 1925 using oil. Juan Gris, who lived from 1887 to 1927 and held Spanish citizenship, worked within cubism and also created the piece Carafe and Book. One detail worth noticing is how the pink and brown tones behind the objects shift the balance of the composition, letting the white vessels and the labeled bottle stand out against the muted ground while the grapes and pitcher anchor the design.
