The Man at the Café

Story

A seated figure takes shape at a café table through broken geometric planes of ochre, blue, orange, and brown, pieced together into an angular impression rather than a direct likeness. The composition combines oil paint with pasted paper on canvas, dated 1914. Juan Gris, a Spanish artist (1887–1927), worked within cubism, building this scene from fragmented forms rather than realistic depth.

Where it works
