The Mandolin

Story

A mandolin shares the canvas with a cluster of grapes, broken into angular planes and overlapping lines. The palette stays within brown, gold, black, and white, giving the still life a structured, almost architectural rhythm. Painted in 1921, the work comes from Juan Gris (1887–1927), a Spanish artist associated with cubism, whose approach to composition favored geometric clarity over naturalistic form.

Where it works

A warm-toned still life suited to dining rooms and living rooms, and to restaurants, in a horizontal format.
