Story
A brown table holds bottles, fruit, and a pale cloth, all broken into angular, overlapping shapes that lean toward abstraction while still suggesting familiar objects. The palette stays restrained, built from muted greens, whites, and earthy browns that blend the forms into one another. This arrangement comes from The White Tablecloth, painted in 1912 in oil on panel, and it is held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The piece was made by Juan Gris, a Spanish artist associated with cubism whose notable work includes Carafe and Book. Looking closely, the white cloth seems to fold and fracture across the table, catching geometric planes of light and shadow that pull the whole composition into a tight, interlocking structure of flat, faceted surfaces.
