Story
A violin rests among playing cards and scattered objects atop a table, rendered through fractured planes set against a warm, patterned orange backdrop. The composition reduces its subject to geometric facets, giving the scene a flattened, abstracted quality typical of the style in which it was made. The piece was created in 1913 using oil, and it is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Juan Gris (1887–1927), a Spanish artist, worked within cubism and also produced the notable piece Carafe and Book. One detail worth noticing is how the violin's curved body is broken into angular shards that still suggest its recognizable shape, even as the surrounding cards and table edges dissolve into overlapping geometric sections across the orange ground.
