Story

Four young women stand in loosely draped garments, each holding flowers, posed before a backdrop thick with ivy. Their figures and the foliage behind them appear in soft sepia tones, giving the group a quiet, dreamlike stillness. The image is an albumen silver print made in 1868 by Julia Margaret Cameron (1815–1879), a British photographer associated with pictorialism, whose work favored gentle focus and romantic, allegorical arrangements of the human figure.
