Story

A valley opens beneath a clouded sky, its fields spread in green around a looping path. Grazing animals dot the ground near streams that catch the light, while hills rise faintly in the distance under heavy clouds. Julian Ashton made this scene in 1891 using pencil, watercolour, and opaque white. He worked within the Heidelberg School, and the piece entered the Art Gallery of New South Wales through a purchase in 1892.
