Bullfinch and Weeping Cherry

Story

A small bullfinch rests among the drooping sprays of a weeping cherry, its white and pink blossoms set against a deep blue ground marked with Japanese calligraphy. The scene appears in a color woodblock print made in 1833. It comes from the hand of Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849), a Japanese artist associated with ukiyo-e and the Kasei culture, whose work later fed into Japonisme. The print entered the British Museum's collection through purchase from the Fine Art Society.
