Story
Five women in richly patterned kimonos rise in a vertical stack against a plain cream backdrop, their robes rendered in blues, reds, and earthy browns. The scroll is painted in ink and color on silk, completed in 1804. Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849), a Japanese artist associated with ukiyo-e and Kasei culture, created this piece, which entered the Seattle Art Museum through the Margaret E. Fuller Purchase Fund.
