Peony and Canary

Story

A small yellow canary wings its way among orange peony blossoms, their green leaves spread across aged paper marked with Japanese calligraphy. The composition sits within the ukiyo-e tradition, reflecting the Kasei culture of its time. The piece, titled Peony and Canary, comes from Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849), a Japanese artist whose notable work includes Fine Wind, Clear Morning, and whose art is linked to the Japonisme movement.
