Story
Three pale arches curve across a tan surface, crossed by a slanted rectangular bar that cuts through the composition at an angle. The arrangement sits on a muted beige ground, giving the forms a floating, weightless quality against the plain field. Kazimir Malevich painted this oil composition, Construction in Dissolution (Three Arches on a Diagonal Element in White), in 1917, and it is held today at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. The museum's ownership of the piece was recognized through an agreement with the artist's estate. Malevich, who lived from 1879 to 1935, is associated with Suprematism, the movement he helped define through radical abstraction. Looking closely, the curved arches seem to hover independently of the diagonal bar, as though the geometric structure were caught in the act of coming apart.
