Suprematism

Story

A black curved shape sweeps diagonally across a pale cream field, bold and isolated against the open space surrounding it. The composition is spare, built from this single geometric gesture rather than any recognizable subject. Painted in oil on canvas in 1917, the work comes from Kazimir Malevich (1879–1935), an artist associated with Suprematism and the Russian avant-garde, known also for the earlier Black Square (1915).
