Story

Crowds in bright kimonos gather beneath blossoming cherry trees, arranged across two architectural levels in this Edo period composition. Kitagawa Utamaro made it in 1793, using ink, gouache, gold and gold-leaf on bamboo paper as a hanging scroll, now framed, held through the Sumner Collection Fund.
