Story

Five mice stand together in a row, each a different color: gray, red, green, yellow, and blue. Every mouse grips a pair of oversized circular ears, as though holding up its own identity for display. The piece, Colors, Numbers, Letters II, was made in 1985. Its creator, Leo Lionni (1910–1999), was an American children's writer, designer, and graphic artist born in Italy.

Where it works

A muted figure study suited to kids' rooms and nurseries, and to restaurants, in a horizontal format.
