Story

A rounded, cream-colored form fills the center of a plain white background, and perched on top of it is a stylized mouse with oversized ears, posed as though surveying its small kingdom. The piece, titled Frederick XVI, dates from 1967. Leo Lionni (1910–1999), an American and Italian artist who worked as a children's writer, designer, and graphic artist, created this playful character study.

Where it works

A figure study suited to kids' rooms and nurseries, and to restaurants, in a vertical format.
