Story

Tall blades of green grass line up in a row, interspersed with small flowers and insects, all set against a plain white background. The composition is built as a collage, completed in 1960. Its maker, Leo Lionni (1910–1999), was an American artist with ties to Italy, who worked across children's writing, design, and graphic art.
