Story

A squat mortar angles upward on the page, its barrel designed to scatter fragmenting bombs outward on impact. The drawing survives on aged paper rendered in sepia tones, part of a sketch devoted to this weapon design. The artist, Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519), was Italian, a citizen of the Republic of Florence, and worked within the High Renaissance and Renaissance movements, also active as an anatomist and architect.
