Story
Jagged, angular forms interlock across the surface, their red, yellow, blue, black, and white planes overlapping in a dynamic rhythm of color and edge. The composition reads as pure abstraction, built from fractured geometry rather than recognizable subject matter. Marsden Hartley made this piece in oil on paperboard in 1914, during a period when his work engaged with Expressionism. The painting entered the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston as a gift from supporters honoring another couple.
Where it works
Suited to living rooms and media rooms, and to restaurants, in a vertical format.
