Story

A rugged peak rises above forested slopes rendered in deep blues and browns, with white clouds gathering overhead and a small structure visible near water at the base of the scene. The composition conveys a sense of weighty, enclosed nature, as if the land itself presses close around the tiny human mark below. This oil painting dates from 1908 and is held at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Marsden Hartley (1877–1943), an American artist, worked within Expressionism, bringing an intense emotional charge to his depictions of landscape. One detail worth noticing is the contrast between the heavy, dark massing of the mountain and the pale clouds drifting above it, a pairing that gives the whole scene a brooding, atmospheric quality. The small structure near the water offers a quiet point of scale against the looming terrain surrounding it.
