Mountain Lake-Autumn

Story

A lake sits beneath heaped clouds and rising peaks, the whole scene broken into thick patches of blue, yellow, red, and green that press against each other rather than blend smoothly. The composition reads as abstraction more than depiction, suggesting weather and terrain through color and gesture. Painted in oil on masonite in 1912, by Marsden Hartley (1877–1943), an American artist associated with Expressionism, the piece belongs to The Phillips Collection, which acquired it in 1930.
