Story
A cluster of red and orange peppers with their green stems rests in the foreground, set against softly rolling hills rendered in warm earthen hues. Behind the peppers, the land swells into the shapes of the White Mountains, suggesting a layered view where close still-life forms meet distant terrain. This oil painting, titled Mountains, no. 19, was made in 1930 by Marsden Hartley and now belongs to the Dallas Museum of Art, where it entered the collection through the Eugene and Margaret McDermott Art Fund. Hartley, an American painter who lived from 1877 to 1943, worked within American modernism. One detail worth noticing is how the warm tones of the hills echo the colors of the peppers, binding the near and far elements of the composition together.
