Story

A chain of rolling peaks rises in layered slopes of yellow, green, and brown, set beneath a blue sky scattered with white clouds. The composition builds a sense of weight and rhythm through its stacked ridges. Marsden Hartley painted this oil work in 1930. Hartley, who lived from 1877 to 1943, worked within Expressionism, bringing an emotive intensity to this American landscape.
