Story
A face emerges from angular shapes in beige, black, and cream, set against a light ground, its features reduced to flat interlocking planes that read as abstract geometry more than portraiture. The composition sits between figuration and pure form, built from oil on beaver board in 1916. Marsden Hartley (1877–1943), an American artist associated with Expressionism and Dada, created this piece during a period of inventive formal experimentation.
Where it works
A warm-toned figure study suited to media rooms and dens, and to hotel guest rooms, in a vertical format.
