Story

Blocky patches of red, yellow, blue, green, and black interlock across the canvas, broken by white touches and rounded forms that soften the hard-edged structure. The arrangement reads as pure abstraction, built from shape and color rather than any recognizable scene. Marsden Hartley painted this oil work in 1913, during a period connected to Dada and Expressionism. It belongs to the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.
