Story

A balanced arrangement of geometric shapes fills the canvas, with reds, yellows, blues, blacks, and whites arranged around a central structure resembling a building, surrounded by ornamental patterning. The composition is symmetrical, giving the whole image a steady, emblematic quality. This oil painting was made in 1914 by Marsden Hartley (1877–1943), an American artist associated with Expressionism and Dada. The piece belongs to the Daniel J. Terra Collection.
