Story

A bowl of fruit and a goblet rest among richly patterned fabrics in red, yellow, black, and green, their shapes pressed close together on the canvas. The composition is rendered in oil, completed in 1912. Marsden Hartley (1877–1943), an American artist associated with Expressionism, brought bold color and flattened form to this arrangement. The painting entered the Columbus Museum of Art as a gift from Ferdinand Howald.
