Wild Roses

Story

A bundle of wild roses sits wrapped in pale blue paper, their blooms pink and white with yellow centers rising from dark green stems, set against a rusty brown backdrop. Marsden Hartley painted this arrangement in oil on hardboard in 1942. The piece entered the Phillips Collection's holdings the following year. Hartley, an American artist who lived from 1877 to 1943, worked within Expressionism and also had ties to Dada.
