Story
A quiet marsh stretches across the upper half of the scene, while below ground, a hidden chamber holds strange tripod-like forms and a glowing red sphere. This divided view, oil on canvas, was painted in 1865 by Martin Johnson Heade (1819–1904), an American painter associated with the Hudson River school and Luminism. The painting entered the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art through the Dorothy Clark Archibald and Thomas L. Archibald Fund.
Where it works
Suited to living rooms and dens, and to hotel guest rooms, in a horizontal format.
