Story
Clusters of pink orchids with vivid red centers rise amid dense tropical foliage, set beneath a sky softened by mist and drifting clouds. Hummingbirds move through the greenery, drawn to the blossoms in a scene suspended between stillness and quiet motion. This oil painting was created in 1872 and is held today at the Yale University Art Gallery. The artist, Martin Johnson Heade (1819–1904), was an American painter associated with the Hudson River school and Luminism, known also for his work Sunset: A Scene in Brazil. Looking closely, the orchids seem to glow against the shadowed greenery, their red centers catching whatever pale light filters down through the misty air above, giving the whole composition a hushed, humid intensity that draws the eye slowly across each layered petal and leaf.
