Story

Pale pink and white lotus blossoms stretch across the canvas in a horizontal row, their green stems and buds set against a shadowed landscape behind them. The painting was created in oil in 1885 by Martin Johnson Heade (1819–1904), an American painter and traveler associated with the Hudson River school and Luminism. The piece came to the North Carolina Museum of Art as a gift from the Sarah Graham Kenan Foundation.
