Story
A low golden sun hangs over a quiet marsh, its light settling across still water and mist that drifts between scattered haystacks and distant trees. The warm amber glow mixes with soft greens, giving the whole scene a hushed, glowing stillness that suggests the end of day over the Newburyport wetlands. This oil painting, titled Marsh Sunset, Newburyport, Massachusetts, was created in 1876 by Martin Johnson Heade and is held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, having come to the museum as a gift from Isabel B. and Wallace S. Wilson. Heade, who lived from 1819 to 1904 and worked as an American painter, was associated with the Luminism movement. Worth noticing is how the haystacks catch the fading light, standing as small dark shapes against the glowing water and sky.
