Story
Waves roll across the water in heavy swells, their crests breaking into white foam under a sky washed in pink and gold as the sun sinks toward the horizon. The composition balances the restless motion of the sea against the stillness of fading light. This oil painting, titled Seascape: Sunset, was made in 1861 and now belongs to the Detroit Institute of Arts, where it entered the collection through the Founders Society Purchase, Robert H. Tannahill Foundation Fund. The artist, Martin Johnson Heade (1819–1904), worked within the Luminism movement, which favored exactly this kind of attention to atmospheric light over water. Notice how the glow along the wave tops seems to carry the warmth of the sky down into the dark, churning ocean below, uniting both halves of the scene.
