Story
A wide stretch of marsh fills the scene, dotted with haystacks and crossed by narrow channels of water. Trees cluster at the left edge while a heavy, overcast sky spreads above in tones of green, gold, and gray. The painting, titled View of Marshfield, was created in 1866 in oil by Martin Johnson Heade (1819–1904), an American painter, and it is held today at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, which acquired it through museum purchase. Heade worked within the Luminism movement, bringing close attention to atmosphere and light in his landscapes. One detail worth noticing is how the water channels cut quietly through the grasses, leading the eye back toward the dim horizon beneath the clouded sky.
