Story
Two women stretch upward, each reaching among climbing vines fixed to a brick wall, their hands lifting toward fruit above them. The scene is rendered in muted greens, blues, and pinks, giving the moment a soft, quiet rhythm. The print, titled Gathering Fruit, was made in 1893 using color drypoint, softground etching, and aquatint on laid paper, and it is held at the National Gallery of Art, having come from the Rosenwald Collection. Mary Cassatt, who lived from 1844 to 1926 and worked as an American painter and etcher, was associated with Impressionism and created the notable painting Little Girl in a Blue Armchair. One detail worth noticing is how the brick wall behind the women anchors the composition, giving structure to their upward, mirrored gestures as they gather fruit from the vines above.
