Story
A woman dressed in a floral green and white gown holds a small child close, pressing a kiss to its cheek. The figures are rendered in gentle pastel tones with delicate ink lines, giving the scene a tender, intimate quality. This print, titled Mother's Kiss, was made in 1890 using color drypoint and aquatint on laid paper. It is held today at the National Gallery of Art, having come to the museum through the Chester Dale Collection. The artist, Mary Cassatt (1844–1926), was an American figure associated with Impressionism, whose notable work includes The Child's Bath. Worth noticing is how softly the color blends across the mother's dress and the child's skin, lending the embrace a quiet warmth despite the restrained, delicate linework throughout the composition.
