Story
A woman wrapped in a striped robe leans over a young child perched in a basin, the scene painted in soft purples, greens, and earthy browns. The gentle intimacy of the moment is captured through close, careful attention to posture and gesture, as the adult steadies the small figure during the bath. This oil on canvas was completed in 1893 and is held at the Art Institute of Chicago, having entered the collection through the Robert A. Waller Fund. Mary Cassatt (1844–1926), an American painter associated with Impressionism, is also known for her work Little Girl in a Blue Armchair. One detail worth noticing is the way the muted color palette unites the figures with the surrounding basin and fabric, softening the boundary between skin, cloth, and water.
