Story

Beneath blossoming trees, a dense crowd gathers in a park-like setting, dressed in bright patterned clothing scattered across a lively field of greens, blues, yellows, and earthy browns. The composition is painted in oil on canvas adhered to panel, completed in 1917. Maurice Brazil Prendergast (1858–1924), an American painter associated with Post-impressionism and the Ashcan School, created this piece, which entered the Phillips Collection's holdings after being acquired in 1921.
