Story

A busy open square fills with people dressed in dark attire, their small forms spread across a pale ground and framed by tall buildings in soft, earthy hues. Rendered in watercolor on paper, the composition captures an everyday European gathering. Maurice Brazil Prendergast (1858–1924), an American painter and draftsperson associated with the Ashcan School and Post-impressionism, also created the notable work Autumn.
