Story

A kabuki performer stares out in stark white face paint, dark hair and dark robes, gripping a sword against a soft green backdrop. The figure represents Ichikawa Sumizo VI in the role of Shirai Gonpachi. This is a color woodblock print made in 1926 by Natori Shunsen, a Japanese printmaker associated with Nihonga, working as both illustrator and ukiyo-e artist. The print entered the Toledo Museum of Art as a gift.
