Story
A kabuki performer gazes out with painted theatrical features, dressed in a purple collar over a green garment patterned with geometric motifs. The print renders the figure in sharp black, white, purple, and green tones, capturing the dramatic intensity of the stage role. This color woodblock print, created in 1928, depicts the actor Nakamura Kaisha I as Okaru from the play Yoikoshin. The artist, Natori Shunsen, born 1886 and died 1960, worked within the Nihonga movement as a Japanese printmaker.
