Story
A loose cluster of blossoms fills a green vase, the petals glowing in red, pink, yellow, and orange against a plain beige backdrop. The flowers seem to overflow the container, their colors mingling without any strict botanical arrangement. This oil painting was made in 1915 and is held at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. Odilon Redon (1840–1916) worked within Symbolism, a movement concerned with mood and suggestion rather than exact description. Looking closely, the warm hues seem to press forward from the muted ground, giving the bouquet a glow that sets it apart from its quiet setting.
