Story
A group of stone cottages with pale and grey rooftops clusters together in a stretch of green countryside, set beneath a wide blue sky scattered with white clouds. This oil painting, titled Breton Village, was created in 1890 and is held today at the National Gallery of Art. Its maker, Odilon Redon (1840–1916), was a French artist associated with Symbolism whose body of work includes Les Yeux clos. Looking closely, the roofs show a quiet contrast of white and grey tones against the surrounding greenery, giving the humble buildings a soft, varied texture under the open sky.
