Story
A cluster of winged insects floats together with small blossoms, suspended over a rugged stretch of rock beneath a sky filled with blue and soft white clouds. The arrangement feels light, almost weightless, as though nothing in the composition is bound to the ground below. This oil painting was made in 1910 and is held today at the Museum of Modern Art. Odilon Redon, who lived from 1840 to 1916, worked within the Symbolist movement, giving his imagery a quality that leans toward suggestion rather than strict observation. One detail worth noticing is how the rocky terrain below contrasts with the delicate butterflies and flowers above, creating a quiet tension between the solid earth and the airy forms that seem to drift just above it, caught in a pale blue atmosphere streaked with clouds.
