Story

A small dark sailboat drifts on blue water beneath a sky heavy with drifting shapes in orange, yellow, and purple, as if the clouds themselves had turned to color and mist. Odilon Redon made this piece in pastel, with stumping, incising, and brushwork, on tinted wove paper mounted to cardboard, in 1903. Redon, French (1840–1916), worked within Symbolism.
