Story
Two slender trees rise with brown trunks set against a wide field of yellow, the surrounding space dotted with small flowers and rounded shapes rendered in soft, muted colors. The arrangement is tall rather than wide, giving the trunks room to stretch upward through the patterned backdrop. This piece was painted in 1901 by Odilon Redon using oil, and it is held at the Musée d'Orsay. Redon worked within Symbolism and is also known for his notable work Les Yeux clos. One detail worth noticing is how the circular forms scattered across the yellow ground echo the rounded shapes found elsewhere in the composition, giving the flat background a subtle sense of rhythm and texture despite its simplicity.
